Arrested for DWI in North Carolina: What Now?

January 28, 2015 by Chris Grinnell

If you are charged with a DWI in North Carolina, you will certainly be distraught and confused about what is happening to you. This is understandable. It is important to realize that many people have already gone through what you are experiencing. Your first priority should be to obtain good advice so that you are aware of all your options and know what is ahead. Here are matters you can expect to deal with in the coming weeks:

Attorney Advice and Representation

You will want to obtain an attorney to help you understand the charges, figure out what choices are available, and advise you on what action to take.

Alcohol Assessment

Everyone convicted of DWI in North Carolina must have an alcohol assessment done by an appointed professional. Your attorney might advise you to undergo the assessment and get treatment before your trial, to demonstrate your intention of dealing with the situation.

Fines, Other Costs

In addition to attorney fees, there will be fines and court costs to pay. For instance, there is a reinstatement fee to obtain a new drivers license, and a fee for alcohol assessment as well. If treatment is ordered, you will have to pay for that as well.

License Suspension

Your drivers license will probably have been suspended for a minimum of 30 days. You should never drive with a suspended license: this is illegal and can lead to some harsh punishments.

Ignition Interlock

Depending on your case, you might become eligible to drive after a short time by installing an ignition interlock device. Your attorney can help advise you on whether this is an option. If you are advised or required to install an interlock, be sure to find a provider that offers the most convenient service, as well as advanced and reliable technology.

Dealing with a DWI arrest is never enjoyable. But with the right guidance, some determination, and the best possible support from an ignition interlock provider, you can get back on the road and start to put your life together.
